Sourcing new wines for our customers is what gets us excited.
Highlight of the wine buying year
The highlight of our trade show calendar year is Prowein in Düsseldorf; the world’s titanic of wine shows, the scale of which is incomprehensible. Needless to say comfortable shoes are a must. It’s our annual pilgrimage to taste wines from 61 different countries and from over 6,800 exhibitors.
Our approach and key to us having a successful trade shows is preparation- you really need to do your homework. Before any show we take the time to determine what markets we want to explore and then plan our tactics. We were well prepared as always, this year and devised a program to seek wines from countries and regions where we have gaps in our current portfolio.
During the show we spoke to veteran and novice trade show visitors from across the wine trade – taking in exhibitors, other buyers and the media – to exchange information and ideas and to ensure we got the best deals and innovations.
Wine sampling- lots…
And yes we did taste lots of wines, but with the wine world in one huge venue we needed to take advantage of every opportunity presented. We always like to find something a bit different so it’s best to keep an open mind and an enterprising palate. It’s not just our tastes we are basing the sampling on but also those of our customers.
We gathered lots of new contacts and tasted some cracker wines before deciding on which new wines to import. It is an exhausting process, but long and busy days are always a great time for us to catch up with visiting winemakers and network with people from across the world as well as old friends.
Rose wine the next big thing
The big focus of the show this year, and our biggest find, was the increasing popularity of dry rose wines. The range was extensive with Provence being the prime producer. Currently Provence produces the best rose wines in the world and interestingly France sells more rose than white wines in its domestic market. We have no doubt that dry rose wines will become more and more popular here too.
Ever growing wine range
So expect to see an increase in our range of dry rose wines very soon, we will also be organising numerous tastings in our shops so you too can discover the joys of dry rose wines! So with all our efforts at this years show we believe we have sourced a number of fantastic new wines for our customers. Once available we will have our new wines available to buy in both our stores and website. It has been a tiring but enjoyable couple of weeks so far and we hope our customers are as thrilled as we are with our new finds.
