Sourcing new wines is what gets us excited.
Trade shows are therefore invaluable platforms to develop contacts and to discover new wines to expand our portfolio.
Highlight of the wine buying year.
The world's titanic of wine exhibitions.
The highlight of our trade show calendar year is Prowein in Düsseldorf; the world’s titanic of wine shows, the scale of which is incomprehensible. Needless to say comfortable shoes are a must. It’s our annual pilgrimage to taste wines from 61 different countries and from over 6,800 exhibitors.
Our approach and key to us having a successful trade shows is preparation- you really need to do your homework. Before any show we take the time to determine what markets we want to explore and then plan our tactics. We were well prepared as always, this year and devised a program to seek wines from countries and regions where we have gaps in our current portfolio.
During the show we spoke to veteran and novice trade show visitors from across the wine trade – taking in exhibitors, other buyers and the media – to exchange information and ideas and to ensure we got the best deals and innovations.
Do you have to taste all the wines?
Wine sampling, lots...
Yes, we did taste lots of wines.
With the wine world in one huge venue we needed to take advantage of every opportunity presented. We always like to find something a bit different so it’s best to keep an open mind and an enterprising palate.
It’s not just our tastes we are basing the sampling on but also those of our customers.
We gathered lots of new contacts and tasted some cracker wines before deciding on which new wines to import.
It is an exhausting process, but long and busy days are always a great time for us to catch up with visiting winemakers and network with people from across the world as well as old friends.
