Maison Prosper Maufoux

In 1860, Prosper Maufoux, a lawyer and passionate about wine, left his profession and decided to go into a new venture. He proceded to set up his own business in Santenay, a village in the south of the Côte de Beaune. His son Cyprien develops export sales in Britain, Holland and the USA. In 1970, his grandson Pierre moved into the premises of a private hotel, built in 1935 by Jacque Marie Duvault-Blochet (owner at that time of the prestigious Domaine de la Romanee Conti).

This great building has some spectacular underground cellars built on two levels, the oldest of which dates back to the 15th century. This is where Pierre matures his great wines from the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. In 1994, Robert Fairchild, an American importer of the wines of Prosper Maufoux, took over the running of the estate until his death. The house was finally bought over by Eric Piffaut, whose roots in the Burgundy wine business go back to 1898.
